Cavan Mosque, operated by Cavan Islamic Cultural Society CLG, provides religious services to the Muslim community of County Cavan and the surrounding area. These services are religious in nature. They are provided in accordance with Islamic teachings, are separate from the Irish civil legal system, and do not determine or alter any person’s rights or obligations under Irish law. Members of the community are advised to consult a solicitor on all matters relating to the legal framework in Ireland.

Islamic marriage (nikah)

The mosque conducts Islamic marriage ceremonies and offers premarital counselling. An Islamic marriage conducted at the mosque is a religious ceremony only. Couples wishing to be legally married in Ireland must separately register their marriage through the Civil Registration Service.

Religious guidance

Members of the community may seek guidance on questions of Islamic practice, law and ethics, including matters relating to family life. Guidance is given in accordance with Islamic teachings and, where appropriate, in consultation with external Islamic scholars.

Fatwa sessions

A fatwa is a religious opinion on a question of Islamic practice, given to those who voluntarily seek religious guidance. Many questions can be answered directly. Where a question concerns more than one person, for example a matter arising within a family, a dispute between members of the community, or a question of inheritance, the mosque may convene a fatwa session so that everyone concerned has the opportunity to give their account before an opinion is given.

A fatwa session is a religious meeting, held in consultation with a qualified Islamic scholar. Attendance is a matter of religious conscience; there is no legal or civil obligation to attend, and a decision not to attend has no legal consequence.

The mosque is not a court, tribunal or mediator with legal authority. Any opinion given is a religious opinion only. It is not legally binding or enforceable in Ireland and does not determine or alter any person’s rights or obligations under Irish law.

Funeral services

The mosque leads funeral prayers (janazah) and supports bereaved families in accordance with Islamic practice.

Former Imam and Khateeb, Cavan Mosque (2018–2023)

Zaurbek Musaev studied theology at the Islamic University of Madinah. He served as Imam, Khateeb and teacher at Cavan Mosque from May 2018 to May 2023. In that role he led Friday prayers and sermons, conducted Islamic marriages and premarital counselling, led funeral prayers and supported bereaved families, provided religious and spiritual counselling to the congregation, gave guidance on Islamic practice, law and ethics, ran youth programmes, and represented the mosque in interfaith and community outreach. He continues to handle questions relating to Islamic religious matters on behalf of the Society.

He previously served as Imam and Khateeb at the Irish Muslim Cultural Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin (2016–2017), and has been a guest khateeb at Muslim Community North Dublin, Al Furqan Mosque, Limerick, and Lewisham Islamic Centre, London.
